remote PC access

I want to configure a work PC so it can accessed from a home machine for a friend who isn't exactly the most computer literate. I know there are several way of doing this including VNC.

Is Pc Anywhere my best bet for the technically challenged?

I would talk to the work admin to make sure it's approved/kosher and follows their security and remote access policies

He owns his own business and his is the only computer in the office. There is no network.

Basically, I get to do whatever I want. But knowing how limited his computer knowledge is, I'm looking for the simplest possible way to do this and the least likely way he can screw it up. The computer is going to be rebooted frequently, so I don't think remote desktop is a great choice here.

Basically, he wants to check his email from home and access files (Access database) from home on his work PC.

The work PC has XP Pro and the home machine has XP Home.

I run RDP on XP PRO and my computer is under constant reboots from the power going out and as long as my router sends the updated IP to dyndns i have never had a prob connecting.

Plus RDP is free.

Windows XP Pro includes a Remoter Desktop, and there are many third party Remoter Control programs as well.

Whether to use Win Remote Desktop (RTP) or a regular remote program might depend in the way you are using it, and who, or what is on the other side. RDT is more like an OS thing rather than an application.

But, No need to ?torment? yourself you can try this application it is free.
Takes few minutes to set it up.

If you do not like it you would have a frame of reference to choose something else.

If you decide to go the RDT way, here you have two links with help for Win Remote Desktop (RDT).

If there's no network, dow he use dial up? You can use PC Anywhere to dial directly from one PC to another using the modems. I'm not sure if any other software lets you do that.

RDP is a better choice for most stuff (imho) if he is using pro already. The other option would be UltraVNC with an encryption plugin or tunneled through SSH

If the computer at work is XP Pro, he can still download the RDP client and use it on his XP Home computer

Actually, the RDP client is already bundled with XP Home. It's for the 9x OSes that you have to download the client. All that matters is that you have an RDP client. You can even connect via RDP through Linux. I did it the other day.

As long as the machine that you are trying to connect TO is XP Pro, you can use RDP.

XP Pro's Remote Desktop is free, works really well, and is among the easiest to make work.

I haven't used PCAnywhere or LapLink since 2002. Both didn't work very well for me when their XP versions came out. There were reliability and driver issues. I gave them both up when I found how well Remote Desktop worked.
