I am looking to find some way to get sharing to work more normally like it does in a win98 network where you just put in a password for the share. in win2k you have to create a username with no password and win98 users enter that username as a password.. how to i log onto the system with a username that has a password from a win98 system since there is only a password entry box but not one for username?

You can enable the guest account and set up permissions for the shares so that the guest account can access it. Also, make sure that the guest account has no password (or has the password of your choice like you set in Win98).

You may also need to tell Win2k that the guest account can connect to your computer or whatnot.

if you do that, make sure you have some heavy firewalling/router action going on... i mean, if you're enabling the guest account, and then telling 2k that guest can connect to it, that pretty much leaves your computer looking pretty good for a break-in... (there's a reason why one of the first things any "securing your 2000 machine" primer will tell you is to make sure guest is disabled!).

ya exactly why i do not want to enable the guest account. i created an account with highly restricted access for people to get on my share, but i cant use a password with it or it will not work. i would mostly like to be able to access my regular account with all the shares it has remotely
