The battery in my car's key fob is dead. It is a CR 2016 and physically looks identical to the CR 2032 (motherboard battery), of which I have a couple spares sitting around.

According to the specs I've been able to find online, the CR 2016 is 3V 80 mAH and the CR 2032 is 3V 220 mAH, but I must confess to not having the slightest idea what the specs mean. Can I safely substitute a CR 2032 for a CR 2016 or must I find someplace that sells the 2016?

uhh mAH shouldn't matter.... just means more mAH = last longer. Voltage is identical, you should be fine.

The numbers in CR 2032 and CR 2016 refer to the outer physical dimensions of the battery. I'm not sure what they're measured in, but the 2032 is twice as thick as the 2016 (which gives it the additional capacity).

If you can fit the 2032 into your device (be careful not to break any plastic tabs), it should work fine, as deadlyapp says.
