Remote File Server

I have built a 130GB file server that I would like to use as a redundant backup system. I have 5 remote computers that I want to backup over the internet to this remote file server. The file server itself will be behind a router. Two of the remote machines are networked behind a different router, another machine is behind a different router, one will share the router with the file server, and the other computer is behind its own router also. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what hardware I will need (routers, vpn, etc.) and what software to run on the file server? Would Linux with Samba be the best solution? Would standard IIS work? I am not too familiar with Active Directory, but would this be beneficial here? Also, I would like to implement a VPN for security of files, how would I do that? These are some big questions, so any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm not sure you actually need additional hardware. I think in order to setup a VPN you just need to use PPTP, and i know at least the new latest 2.4 linux kernel has support for it (of course MS OS's do as well).

I would suggest using Linux because of it's stability and is less vulnerable than MS OS's, but how well do you know Linux? If you don't know Linux, and the data is sensitive enough to require all this security, perhaps Linux may be more of a hinderance. On the same note, I wouldn't trust IIS because it's a prominent hacker target these days.

Why all the routers?

I will have various amounts of data from the other computers. Probably in the neighborhood of 650MB-1GB a piece.

I have the routers at the other locations for security and networks that are behind them. They are already in place. I do not know Linux extremely well, but I think the stability would be nice. Also, I want to be able to encrypt the data flow, since it will be happening on a regular basis.

I had an earlier response to using a program in Linux that scheduled backups (it began with an "r"), but I cannot remember the program name.
