Wasn't sure if this was the best place or not, but it relates to Windows so here goes...

Looking to setup some kind of remote file access to a computer at home when I am not there. I'm not interested in Dropbox or SkyDrive or anything that uploads my documents to a server. I'm also looking for something that will allow me to transfer large file sizes (2gb+) from the computer at home across the internet to wherever I'm at.

I found this potential option:
http://web.synametrics.com/synamandownload.htm
However it limits me to one user for the free version. Everything else appears to do what I want.

Would like to be able to setup a couple users if possible. Prefer a free solution but open to suggestions. I know I can do RDP transfer but that can be slow and it is not always something I want to do. There will be people that do not RDP into the computer transferring files to/from.

I also have nothing against setting up a server to run this off of. It'd be in a VM though. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Team Viewer has a file transfer built in. You connect to remote system, click file transfer button, and you just drag and drop files to/from the remote system.

I have the same question. Haven't looked into those solutions yet, but I used to run Linux on my server so I usually default to SFTP with SSH. It's not perfect (very slow on LAN compared to SMB) but it got the job done and has a major advantage: no need for specific clients, every platform I know has a SFTP/FTP client available.

On Windows I've been using BitVise SSH Server, which I found quite easy to setup. I had a full access account for me and another for my ex, so she could access our documents, photos and videos from across the ocean (I live in Portugal, she lives in New York).

I must say I never had an issue with Bitvise. The reason I'm looking into other options is to avoid installing third-party software. This means the alternative I'm currently looking into is Windows native WebDav server.

Could someone shed some light on the matter?
- Am I right in going with WebDav just because it doesn't require more software on my PC and it's widely supported by file transfer clients?
- Do any of the other options have any significant advantages?

I agree. Team viewer is free and works for Win. It allows full remote control and file transfers.
