I want to set up a remote desktop connection so I can access my computer from work..

Now I need to know what to do. i tried this today, btu I keep getting the timed out error..

At home, all I did was put a checkmark in the box that says allow users to remotely connect to this computer

I am using the administrator account..

On this computer (runnign win 98)
I downloaded the client program from ms..
I entered the IP address under where it asks for the computer
the username and the password

what do i put as the domain? my computer name?

Any help with this woul dbe great.. thanks.

What kind of connection do you use at home? Do you have a static globably accessable address? Can you ping that address from work?

You also might have a firewall at work that blocks this type of request.

If you have a router at home, you have to open port 3390. Also, make sure that the administrator account has a password on it. You won't be able to logon if the account doesn't have a password. Hope this helps.

CABLE @ HOME might have the port blocked by default on their side. I know they have a bunch of stuff blocked because i can't map drives when i vpn to work and our IT admin can't do it either. He called up CABLEONE@HOME (our cable internet company in Boise) and they had the port blocked if I recall. If you dont' have DHCP coming from that cablemodem and have a true routable IP address on your machine you shouldln't have any problem. I'd check with the cable company.

It should be as easy as you have mention (IP address + password).

Telnet though port 3389 to see if the port block is the caveat, if only you have telnet service on.

If this is anything like Netmeeting's Remote Desktop Sharing feature, you actually *can* login if the account in question has a blank password. But for some reason, Netmeeting won't accept that. So hit (spacebar) once, and then click Login. Try it, it works, at least in Netmeeting. It took me some time and headscratching to figure that one out.
