I know there are programs like ultravnc to use remote desktop, is there anything built into windows XP home that will allow remote connections or is that only for windows XP pro?

Remote Desktop is XP Pro only (though XP Home does include Remote Assistance for support).

VNC would be a good alternative that you can run on XP Home.

Only for XP Pro. VNC would be one of your best options.

XP Home will allow it to be connected to but cannot connect to another, XP Pro will connect to and can be connected to.

I'll add another vote for logmein.com.

My favorite remote software is still Remote Administrator. VNC is sluggish compared to it. But, logmein not only allows reasonably fast remote control of a system (RemAdmin is faster), but it makes it easy to connect over the net (dynamic IP's are annoying). You could always use dyndns to track/update your IP, and use their updater program, but logmein does this for you. And it's free.

Ok, wow did not think xp home had the client to connect. Now I have a new question. So I'm trying to remote into one of the computers on this lan has windows XP home, there is no firewall on this remote computer, I have file sharing enabled on this remote computer and I can connect to that with no problem but I cannot connect to it with mstsc.

So are you saying that you cannot connect to an XP home computer and control it remotely? Why do they have the check box that says allow this computer to be controlled remotely? Is that a feature only designed to be accessible to MS support or should you be able to connect to it remotely to give someone support?

When I try it says the client could not connect to the remote computer remote connections might not be enabled or the computer might be too busy to accept new connections.

What else do I need to do?

XP Home has the ability to send out a support request ("Remote Assistance"). Then someone can remote in to that system via an emailed invitation. XP Home's remote desktop server functionality is otherwise crippled. For full server functionality you need either XP Pro, MCE2005 or Windows Server.

As others have said, I find logmein.com to be an excellent program.

you can connect to xp home computers...xp home computers can NOT connect to others unless you do "remote assistance" through windows xp itself (invitation file) or windows live/msn messenger.

Fixed.
You had it backwards.
