I'm having difficulty in downloading files from my remote machine on to my local machine. I tried to read the help but it was of no help ;)

I've found Remote Desktop doesn't handle file transfers very good....actually, it doesn't do them at all.

I use both Remote Desktop and UltraVNC....UltraVNC has a dedicated file transfer tool and makes it a breeze to tranfer files between computers.

There is an option to map your local drives to the remote session. "connect automatically to these local devices when logged on to the remote computer: disk drives"

I've overlooked that until now...thanks for the heads up.

i use it all the time. if found it stops working but the drives still show up. just close explorer and reconnect if that happens

Once you have the drive mapping option enabled, you can also cut/copy/paste files between the remote session and local folders without specifically browsing out the new shares.

Both Home and Pro can be used to connect out FROM. Only Pro (your laptop) can be connected TO (e.g. that is the one you can remote control from and RDP client). Unfortunately that is reverse of what you prefer :(

and if i upgraded my desktop to XP pro, i could control one from the other? In other words, i could control my laptop with my desktop, OR, my desktop with my laptop depending on which computer i am at? that is pretty cool.

What kind of things coudl i do with remote destop? Coud i access my videos and mp3 on my home computer with my laptop if i'm at school? Or can i just access documents and stuff?

It's possible to play MP3s on the remote computer and have the sound streamed to the working system. Videos don't work very well since the screen isn't refreshed fast enough for them to be watchable.
