remote desktop which should host works?

Im a bit little confused about using the remote desktop. I m having a hard time to understand how it works.

I m trying to set up my window xp home editon sp2 as a host computer so I can use my laptop (window xp pro) to access into my home computer. I followed every instructions and it still wont work for some reasons.

My friend told me that Window xp home won't work as a host. It must be window xp pro. However, i heard the new window xp home sp2 can host the remote desktop?

Like i said, i m rookie....

I have router firewall and I tried to set up forwaring port too. It won't work. Can I try on my laptop in the same room where my desktop computer to try it?

Thanks in advance....

i dont think xp home can host remote desktop connections. I think your friend is right, you need to have xp pro.

In the event that youre right and sp2 lets home users host a connection, check your windows firewall settings and make sure remote desktop is an exception.

to add on that, if you ever use a non-standard port for remote desktop on XP SP2, make sure your windows firewall or your firewall software is allowing TCP inbound traffic on that particular port. XP SP2 has the default Remote Desktop port open. 2003 there's no firewall by default so no need to turn on anything after changing your port in regedit

You need WinXP Pro, when you upgrade to SP2 the first Screen does not say WinXP Home any more but it is still XP Home under the hood.

If you can not upgrade to WinXP Pro, or who ever is on the computer to be ?Controlled? find it to hard to deal with RDT, or you have problems setting RDT, this is just as good and much easier to set.

wow thanks guys. Those replies help me understand how it works better. I forgot all about software firewall. I guess I have to figure how to set up router and software firewall correctly. I don't know why the window xp home edition isnt allowed to be the host. I guess i have to upgrade window xp pro someday.
