Remote Desktop vs VPN

remote desktop is just that access to a remote desktop. so you can do all that you would be able to as if sitting at the mcahine.

a VPN allows you to connect to your network at work or to connect networks together using an encypted tunnel. this will allow lan network level access but over a secure channel. ie map network drives use servers etc,

Remote Desktop is sent in plain text. You should use remote desktop thru a VPN so all data is going thru the encrypted tunnel. Thats what I do.

How would one go about setting something like this up...?

mboy,

Remote Desktop is encrypted, there is some initial connection information that is not encrypted (cert info) and some fixes were put in in W2K SP2 to encrypt additional info that should have been encrypted.

I have to lans that I manage remotely. I used to use remote desktop to connect to machines. Because of changes in the health care laws (HIPPA) we now do all our remote management through VPN which allows me to be on site as thought I were plugged into the network. I can then use remote access anywhere on the lan, share drives, printers, etc.

VPN can be finiky and it has toyed with my local connection some. I use a sonicwall VPN which I'm told is very secure.

HOpe that nugget helps,

Gravity

I do not believe it is unless you bind the IPsec driver to it. I know for a FACT at the very least the login isn't because my snort sensor picks it up and dumps the username in clear text!

I also use a sonicwall endpoint-endpoint with my home PC and tunnel the remote desktop thru it (3DES).

On my lappy I use the sonicwall global VPN client as that lappy is part of my work domain!
