Remote desktop / VPN / Smartcard

I have a windows 2003 server with a usb smartcard reader and I have configured the VPN connection to connect using it. Great.

But if I remote desktop to this server and try to establish a VPN connection, I get the message that no smartcard is present or no reader is present (if I disable in remote desktop options). It?s trying to use the client to read the smartcard..

I would like to be able to remote desktop to this server and then establish a vpn connection which needs smartcard authentication. Is this possible to do with remote desktop?

TIA

You need to install the smartcard CSP on the server you are remoting to. What cards are you using?

Ok, I completely misread that, sorry. I'm not sure if you can do what you're asking from a RDP session.

You could leave your smartcard in the reader attached to the server then mstsc /console in maybe. 😛

Tried that buy it didn't make any difference...

IIRC you need a reader present on the physical system you're remoting into. Yes, it uses the client system to read the Smartcard (so the client system also needs a Smartcard reader as well as the Smartcard you want to use to login with).
