Remote Desktop through ActionTech Gateway
Problem connecting from outside gateway: "The page cannot be displayed"

I'm attempting to use Remote Desktop (RD) to connect to a computer 130 miles away. I'm using my local 2 system LAN to learn how to setup RD and debug my configuration.

HERE'S MY PROBLEM:

When I try http://140.99.73.147:3308/tsweb or http://140.99.73.147:3309/tsweb I get "The page cannot be displayed" error message. The IE title bar says "Cannot find Server". I had someone try these URLs from another location and they got the same message.

I need some help identifying what I've forgotten to configure or have misconfigured,

HERE'S WHAT I'VE DONE:

I've got one local computer at 192.168.0.9 (Nine) and another at 192.168.0.8 (Eight) and the ActionTech DSL gateway is at 140.99.73.147.

1. Set the ActionTech to forward ports 3309 for system Nine and 3308 for system Eight using the tcp protocol. The ActionTech screens shows: 3309-3309 tcp 192.168.0.9 and 3308-3308 tcp 192.168.0.8.

2. Set PortNumber value in the registry for each system, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp, 3309 for Nine and 3308 for Eight.

3. Enabled RD in my computer properties: my computer->properties->remote tab->checked RD allow box and Remote Assistance allow box for both computers.

4. Enabled solicited and offer remote assistance in local group policy on both computers.

5. Internet Connection Firewall is disabled and I shutdown zonealarm for the tests.

When I use IE and enter http://Eight/tsweb or http://192.168.0.8/tsweb from Nine RD works great.
When I use IE and enter http://Nine/tsweb or http://192.168.0.9/tsweb from Eight RD works great.

When I use the RD connection dialog, all programs->assocessories->communications->remote desktop connection, 192.168.0.8:3308 works from Nine and 192.168.0.9:3309 from Eight.

Thanks for the advice and info!

I think it has to do with the IP forwarding setup
I have server ip number setup as default(DMZ), I probably shoudl take it off and try to forward seperately. I jsut dont knwo what port number to use so my server(which is also DHCP server) will have internet access

Is your default set on 0.0.0.0 ?

I can ping the gateway and the other computer.

You need to port forward ports 80 (IIS) and 3389 (RD) for RD web client.

Which default 0.0.0.0 are you refering to?

looks to me like they are conflicting

ok try this

on 9 put a dns client get it here www.dynu.com like i do

same on 8 but different name for the dns client

so ETC, www.madeupname.dynu.com/tsweb

the connection page will show, then use 8 to connect to 9 and visa versa you cant connect to 9 from 9/tsweb you will need to connect to 9 from 8

best thing to do is use the same method to use the RD client no tsweb its much better and faster.

if i have not made myself clear please let me know

i RD to servers with 1 external ip and multiply internal servers this way

Regards

Here's a couple of articles that might help:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/northrup/03may16.asp

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Microsoft_Network/Q_20748119.html

I had internet connection firewall disabled. I enabled it and enable remote desktop.

I also was trying to specify an WAN IP from behind the gateway to another computer behind the same gateway to test things (same LAN). This may have been a problem.

Had someone try my WAN IP, 140.nn.nn.nnn, remotely and it worked. Make sure all software firewalls are down and ICF has remote desktop enabled.

I haven't totally tested it yet, waiting for remote person to get back to me.
