Remote Desktop rules the school

in an incredibly wasteful display of bandwidth i'm VPN'd into the campus network and RD'ing to my computer sitting... right here. the best part is that i'm playing mp3s over RD. sure, they sound like crap on the laptop speakers and i could just use my network drive to do so, but this is so much cooler.

i remember connecting to my mates computer while he was in the middle of a cs game, sure the screen jolted at something like a whipping 0.5fps but it was cool to watch for a minute before I got pissed off and closed the game for him

i like RD more and more, i use it alot these days

i vpn from home , then RD into one of my work box, then from there i can hit any of my work resources/desktops , with my cable modem, it is almost as good as being there

do you need to VPN in order to RD?? doesn't RD encrypt all packets?

No, you do not need to VPN. Remote Desktop uses an encrypted protocol. For instance, my school blocks VPN ports, but I can use RD fine because it uses port 3389 and it is a secure port.

I doubt that. RD does not allow for DirectX or OpenGL passthrough.

From what I've read...the initial login is not encrypted, but after that, it is.

no, i just wanted to make sure it wasn't just figuring out that both computers are connected via 100 mbit pipe. this is a sort of "real usage" test

From what I've read...the initial login is not encrypted, but after that, it is.

It's all encrypted. It uses a handshake similar to what is used in the MsChap v2 handshake (IIRC).

It is integrated into the OS, so it offers seamless usage.

the only previous thing i've had experience with is VNC... this is a ton faster... and VNC couldn't stream an mp3 to the local computer. i did manage to game a little with vnc

The really big problem with VNC, is that it is not encrypted.

Lucky for me, I'm one of the terminal services administrators at my office

I just built the server running terminal services a couple of months ago... I love the ability to easy administrate our network from anywhere. Instead of having to log on as myself at whatever workstation, I can just open a browser and connect to my running session on the terminal server. Makes administration much faster and easier.

ONLINE RD is the greatest.

Too bad I suck at html...othwise I would get WEb-based TS working off my website.

If I'm not mistaken... tsweb is a part of terminal services... should be installed on the server, can be enabled or disabled at will by the server admin.

Search for "tsweb"... I believe you can download it from microsoft... you don't have to do any coding at all. Just install a couple of files on any webserver (or your local workstation if you like) and viola - you have a RD connection via internet explorer.

This program does not work on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Do you know of such a program for those OSes? I do not use Windows 2000 anymore, but the concept behind that program is nice.
