Can I use RD at my school for my home PC if it's connected to a router with a firewall?

What would I need to do to get around it?

forward Port 3389 to IP address of your PC.

it works better if you give static IP to your PC tho. 🙂

To make terminal services even more cool, download this to allow copy & paste between client and server...

RDP Clip

This program does not work on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. Do you know of such a program for those OSes? I do not use Windows 2000 anymore, but the concept behind that program is nice.

2003 and RDP will copy files. only if you are using Win 2k and Terminal Services as client will you need copy files.

I just tried it with my Windows 2003 Server connected using Windows XP Pro. I could not copy a file using Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V on the local machine,

I'm completely updated with the admin pack installed on my XP machine. Do you have the resource kit installed? Because I don't have that installed.

I'm on a WIN2k Pro machine that is a client when I connect to an XP machine using RD (terminal services). How come I get an error when trying to install this rdpclip.exe saying "program to be updated may be missing or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program..." ?

Terminal services client was installed on this WIN2k machine a while back and is updated to the latest SPs..

wow, rdc sucks. When you connect to a client machine, the machine is locked for the client. No replacment for Radmin so far. Stupid.

How is RD different from any other remote tool like PCAnywhere or Remote Administrator ? I use the latter quite a bit.

the only previous thing i've had experience with is VNC... this is a ton faster... and VNC couldn't stream an mp3 to the local computer. i did manage to game a little with vnc

The really big problem with VNC, is that it is not encrypted.

You can encrypt it with zebedee (http://www.winton.org.uk/zebedee/) or SSH (if you're already have an SSH server). I believe both cases allows for possible added compression.

Do you have to have a static ip? My dsl modem acts as a NAT i think and my ip on my computer at home is a 10.10.(you get the point, non routable ip)......

You can use remote assistance if you do not want to lock the workstation. The reason the workstation gets locked is because you only have a remote desktop server, not a terminal server installed. This means only one workspace rather than multiple. When you use Windows Server 2003, the server does not get locked.

I love Remote Desktop too, but i can't use it... 🙁 XP's Remote Desktop keeps crashing since I've gotten
my new Thinkpad X30.
I connect to my desktop computer which is running at a high resolution from my X30 which
is running at 1024x768. A can use it for about 5 mins before the X30 hangs, and gives me a device error.
After that, my display is messed up (colors and size). When I go to shut down my X30, I get a blue screen
saying Process_Has_Locked_Pages. When I restart, I send the error report to MS and using their new error reporting
reply system, I got a message saying the graphics caused a problem. I've tried 3 versions of Intel's 830MP graphics drivers (original that came with X30, latest from IBM's website, latest from Intel's website) and get the same problem every time 🙁 I've even tried setting both computers to the same resolutions. Nothings gets RD to work for me! anyone know what could be causing this?
:|

any guides on this? i never tried it.

faster or better then pc anywhere? i remember that being still not quite that fast over home network.

Our web server firewall only allows connections from work. So I have to VPN & RD into a computer at work, then from that computer RD to our web server. RD x 2 and it still works great. I love it.
