Remote Desktop Question ???

I am trying to set-up a remote desktop connection on 2 computers running XP pro. The machine at work I am trying to get to is set up and I can use the remote desktop from another computer connected to the LAN at work using the remote desktop connection when I use the local IP address (10.10.10.xxx). When I try to connect to this same computer from home or from a dial-up connection (just to test) I cannot connect. I am using the same IP address (10.10.10.xxx) when I try to connetct. The computer at work is on a SBCYAHOO DSL line with a DSL modem speedstream 5100b connected to a lynksys router. The WAN IP looks like this (70.240.131.xxx). What am I doing wrong?

Any ideas,
Thanks in advance

The 10.10.x.x IP address is a private IP address. Are you establishing any kind of VPN connection to your workplace before trying to connect via Remote Desktop?

No I was trying to connect just like I did on the Lan "start-programs-accessories-communication-remote desktop connection"

Welcome to AT Network Forum.

10.10.10.xxx is a LAN IP and can not go through the Internet.

The computer to be connected to is probably behind a Router.

The IP to use when trying to connect is the WAN IP of the Router, the Router has to be set to Route the connection to 10.10.10.xxx) via the port forwarding.

This page describes another Remote Control program but the method of connection described toward the end applies to other Remote control method as well.

http://www.ezlan.net/vnc#portselect

The port numbers in the page above pertain to VNC Remote Desktop uses port 3389

Things are more complicated if the systems are further secure in a work place or other locations . In such case to should talk to the local IT person

You will need to use vpn... Or depending on where you work and the equipment you use you could open the RDC port on the router and port forward it to the workstation you need to remote into.

2 options...

a) connect to your work VPN from home to get on the same network as the pc you are trying to access. From there, you can RDP 10.10.10.x.

b) forward port 3389 on your work router to 10.10.10.x (the pc you are trying to access). From your home, RDP 70.240.131.x

if you have VPN avaliable, choose option a. if not, talk to your admin...in a business environment b is not ideal, unless maybe you went with VNC over SSL...

When I set-up the VPN connection in XP it asks me for the host-name or IP I use the router IP (70.240.131.xxx) is that correct, what is the host name? I think I forwarded the 10.10.10.xxx computer IP thru port 3389 in the router set-up (lynksys applications/gaming port range forwarding ?) I get error 800 when I try to connect. When the Connect virtual private network connection screen comes up, which user name and password do I use XP machine or SBC Yahoo DSL password and username?

You need to make sure your work even has a VPN set up.
Also, is the linksys router the one at work? If you aren't going the vpn route and decide to port forward, you would need to set it up on the work router.
If you get a VPN connection going you would most likely login with your work credentials. For instance if you are on a domain yourusername@yourdomain.

I am work, work is a pharmacy with 2 xp boxes and 1 unix box networked together with a couple of workstations. The work xp box I want to use remote desktop on is connected to a lynksys router which is connected to a sbcyahoo DSL modem, I can fool with either as far as settings go. I just want to be able to work on one of the XP boxes from my laptop at home.
