Remote Desktop Problem

My work PC recently died and they had to give me a "new" box (actually "inherited" from a former fellow developer). With this new box I'm getting an odd and annoying issue with Remote Desktop.

1. I leave work in the evening and lock my PC as usual (I never shut it down since I might have to remote it at any time).
2. At home I VPN to the work network and remote my work PC via Remote Desktop (been doing this for ages).
3. When done remoting I'll disconnect Remote Desktop, then disconnect VPN (been doing it this way successfully for ages).
4. When I get back to work I shake the mouse, get the login screen, login as usual - but then I get a blank/black screen. I still have a mouse cursor, see HD activity, and I think I can still use the keyboard - but I see nothing and nothing I've tried gets me out of the blank screen.

(I also can't initiate a shutdown when in this state because I generally have a few unsaved noncritical docs open, like trivial queries in query analyzer and whatnot, and these apps prompt to save during shutdown, and with 20 or so app instances running it's impossible to blindly navigate the save dialogs getting popped during shutdown).

Ultimately I end up having to reboot, usually by killing power, because there's nothing else I can do.

I've tried searching the web for this but I haven't found this exact problem - all I find are threads about people who get a blank screen on the target box while making the actual remote connection, not afterwards like I'm experiencing.

I searched here and didn't find anything.

My old work box had XP Pro SP2 fully updated, as does this "new" work box. My home box is also XP Pro SP2 fully updated. The old work box had a matrox dual head video card, but since I don't use dual monitors the hardware folks left me with Intel integrated graphics on this new box. Video driver is up-to-date, I think.

Anybody got any ideas?!

Have you done this with logging off ("Log off") instead of just doing the "Disconnect" ? I'm not sure what impact that might have, but it could be one of the many quircks that the RDC has.

I just spent the past few hours setting up a Windows XP Pro box to allow multipule remote desktops to run. (I'm going to be drawing up a step-by-step guide to do this in case anyone is interested.) I ran into so many little strange things that can't be done, or have to be done a certain way, so give the "Log Off" a shot.

Outside of that I'm not really sure what could be doing that. I know something must be causeing it and I'm sure it could be figured out, but best of luck.

Edit:
I think you are going to like this. Tell me if this could be a solution: Changeing the host machine to automatically return to its previous status before the remote desktop session, though there is a hitch with the example being unlocked, although it might help to bring the system to another state that you might otherwise want.

I found this posted on an old thread here: Link

You should be able to do this.

Type: tscon.exe 0 /dest:consol in the run box to logoff and bring the session back to the way it was.
