remote desktop on a vpn?

i just set up my vpn at home using windows xp pro. when i connect to it at work it connects fine but when i use remote desktop to open my home computer it doesnt connect. i set up my computer to allow remote desktop and i turned off the windows firewall. what is causeing me not to connect using remote desktop?
