Hello all

Im trying to connect my pc and laptop through a remote desktop
but im using windows xp on the laptop and windows 7 on the pc(desktop)
how do i change the ip address so they match and the windows 7 doesnt have the run screen where usally i would type mstsc-v:192.168.3.4/console
but instead it asks for the computer name and i find that to not always work
and they are on the same internet connection.

Any replies will help thanks

Somewhere in your Taskbar properties, you should find an option to display the Run command. I can't remember exactly where it is, and don't have a Vista/7 machine available right now to check.

Also, you should be able to enter an IP address in the Remote Desktop dialogue box where it asks for computer name.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "how do I change the ip address so they match".

Can you clarify exactly what you're trying to accomplish?

well i was told that the ip address's on both computers have to be almost the same for example 192.168.2.3 would be the ip for my desktop and the laptop for it to connect should at least have the 192.168.2 be the same as long as the last number is different.

Yes, they need to be on the same network. So if your desktop is 192.168.2.3 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 (which it would need to be, because 192.168.x.x is a Class C network...but we don't need to get into that), then your laptop would need to be 192.168.2."something" with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

They need to be on the same network, they cannot be the exact same IP address.

I suggest having your Router (or some other device) act as a DHCP server for your network, and have all of your devices automatically obtain their network configuration from DHCP. That way, you don't need to worry yourself with configuring IP/Subnet/Gateway/etc.

DHCP is basically a service that assigns ip's to computers so they can act as a private network (in your case).

It is probably already enabled.

Do you have a password on the computer that your are trying to RD to? It is a requirement.

no i don't
does it need to be in a domain or workgroup and if so for the workgroup should it have the same name..for example if my workgroup is named Home-network should my other computer's workgroup also be Home-network?
