Remote Desktop in XP

Does anyone know much about the Remote Desktop Connection in Windows XP?

Does the host computer have to be part of a domain? I have a home computer connected to the net via DSL but is not part of any domain. How can I set it up to allow Remote Desktop Connection from another computer? I have Remote Desktop enabled. But do I also have to be part of a domain? How do I do this? Any help would be much appreciated!

Turn it on (which you said you did), and then connect to it. No domain or other license restrictions.

You don't need to bump your threads every 20 minutes. As far as the connection problem, the domain issue has nothing to do with it. First, did you turn on remote desktop on your home system? How is that system connected to the internet, is it behind a firewall/router device? Did you setup that device to forward the rdp port to the machine?

Perhaps not on your end, but from the DSL provider?

Well, you didn't answer the first question, did you even turn remtoe desktop on? Second, are you sure the machine is dialed-up when you attempt the test? Does the dialup dsl give you a static or dynamic ip? How are you determining your ip remotely?

Remote Desktop is enabled on the host computer. Yes, the machine is dialed up and connected to the net. And I got the ip through whatismyip.com.

But I'm able to connect to my work computer.

My setup is this:

Desktop running XP at home. Also have laptop at home connected via wireless. Trying to have the laptop connect to the desktop, which I can't seem to accomplish. The laptop is able to connect to my work computer.

What is the laptop wireless connecting to? Is the wireless network adhoc and your using ics on the desktop machine?

Gizmo, we want to help you here. But your inability to explain your environment makes that very hard to do. We answered your question, domains have nothing to do with remote desktop. To diagnose the problem any further your going to have to sit down and describe your network. First you tell us that your machine is directly connected to the internet without a firewall, then a couple posts later you thru a wireless router into the mix. Without knowing your network, it will be impossible to comment any further.

I have a DSL modem connected to a hub. My computer and a wireless router are hooked up to the hub. The computer dials in via PPOE and the wireless router is independently configured.

Ok, first, how does the laptop connect out to the network (does the wireless router or laptop setup a seperate ppoe session?). What ip are you trying to hit the computer on (the external one you get from the ppoe session?). If so, can you ping that address or see other resources on the system (like file sharing) from the laptop?

Thanks for all the help! I finally got it to work. A couple of things I had set wrong: I didn't have a password for my admin account. And I had Internet Connection Firewall enabled under My ISP settings. Unfortunately, the connection is pretty slow but I'll deal. Thanks again.
