I'm trying to setup Remote Desktop so that I can access files on my home PC from my work PC.

At home I am using a gigabit router from D-link. Beautiful
  • *I have 2 PC's on a home network
*Both PC's are running XP Pro
*I have enable Remote Desktop on both my PC's
*I have passwords enabled on both PC's
*I have forwarded ports 3389 TCP for each IP address of each PC, ie: 192.168.0.1 has port 3389 forwarded and the same for my other PC

Now, at work I am running Windows 98
I installed Remote Desktop using my XP PRO CD onto my computer at work
At work we are on a Linksys Router (only 4 PC's connected at work)
Now, when I pull up Remote Desktop, I am not sure what to type in under the fields:
Computer:
Domain:

Under User Name I typed in the name I use for the PC I am trying to access as well as the Password for that PC.

Is there anything else I need to configure at work for my work PC to access my home PC? ie: router settings, ports, etc....

Thnx in advance

VNC blows, and there is no reason to use it on XP.

OP, you don't need to fill in any of those fields. Just run remote desktop, and you should see a field to type the name of the computer you want to connect to. Type in the name and click connect. You'll then be connected to your machine, and you'll see the two fields to type your username and password.

Presumably you mean you've forwarded two different ports, each to 3389. And you know what the two ports are.

Nope, in the 'Computer field' enter the dns name or IP address of your home router (e.g. myrouter.dyndns.org or x.y.z.z). In the user name and password, well, your username and password. On the domain field, if it's not a domain login leave it blank.

Under 'Computer' you would put the IP address that your ISP has assigned to you. You can find this out by checking it in your router settings. Most likely your ISP is giving you a dynamic IP address which changes every now and then. So whenever it changes, Remote Desktop will no longer connect under the old IP address. If you are not on a domain for your home network then you dont need to put anything under 'domain'.

When I connected to my office at my last job, I VPN'd into the network first, then used VNC. You would need a higher end firewall to support a VPN connection. I prefer this to the method of forwarding ports through a firewall, because if you want numerous individuals accessing their computers remotely, you have to change ports for each individual
