Ok, so this is really weird. I changed the port on my desktop's terminal service to 6689 (standard is 3389). I can connect to it with publicIP:6689.

The laptop is left on the default port, but I can't get to it with publicIP or publicIP:3389 (or any other port I try to set it to). I can, however, get to it by doing the local IP for it which is 192.168.1.101.

What is the deal here?! I want to remote into my laptop from work instead of the desktop as the desktop is a dual monitor setup and remote desktop has poor dual monitor support.

Is your work blocking port 3389 with there router? Mine does. Although that is wierd that it works with 6689 i've never heard of that before.

I haven't tried from work yet. I was just working on it back at home on my lunch break and I couldn't do it from there either.

Well if your doing it from inside your network then you will have to use your internal ip addresses 192.168.xx.xx, and you don't have to open a port on your router unless you have to access the router from outside the network.

The issue should be divided into two.

1. How to keep a track of your External IP while you are not at the location?

May be this can Help: How can I connect to my Home Computer/Network/Server through thr Internet?

2. How to use and configure Remote Desktop: Microsoft - Remote Desktop in Windows XP.

Link to: Set Up Remote Desktop Web Connection with Windows XP.

If you can not make it work or would like a less complicated solution: Ultr@VNC - Installation, and Settings
