How do I remotely control my home computer (WinXP Pro) with my work computer WinNT across TCP/IP? I don't have admin access on my work computer so I can't install PcAnywhere.

I was looking at the Web Remote Desktop feature of WinXP but I don't quite understand it. I believe the client computer has to be on the same network as the host computer. How do I get it to work across the internet?

The thing is, you need administrative privileges to install even the client to access your home WinXP machine. That is the problem I ran into when trying to access my home machine from campus computers.

So, what I did instead is set up Windows terminal services web server so that I can access my home machine using a web browser. It works very similar to the remote desktop function, just uses a different method of connecting.

Yes basically that is how it works. You need to however do more than just checking the remote desktop option in your system property pages.

You need to set up a web server on your home machine and then set up the terminal services web server within that. Searching for "terminal services" in the WinXP help system will give some more info on it and show you how to set it up.

<< I think since you're a new to this, maybe try VNC. Thats basic but it also has a web interface and no IIS that way!!!!

Yup, VNC is the way to go. If I'm going across the Internet I tunnel it through SSH.

Well, I see that XP Desktop Sharing is a lot smoother actually splice, but VNC is easier to use if you can't install the XP Client!

I use both on my network, and Terminal Services is MUCH smoother than VNC. I (almost) actually feel like I'm on the other PC when I'm using terminal services, with VNC though it is obvious as there is a small delay to wait for the screen to refresh. This is on a 100Mb network too. If you get the web server portion of terminal services running, this should work really good for you. You just point your work computer at http://ip.address.or.domain.here.com/tsweb and you'll get a little java applet terminal services client. VNC also has a java applet web based client, too, that you should be able to use.

Good luck :)

Thanks for the replies everybody. I almost got remote desktop working for WinXP. I'm running DSL w/ a linksys router and I can connect to my computer with another computer on my network. But with an outside computer I tell someone else to connect my http://my.DSL.assigned.ip and they get the windows remote desktop screen with the "server" and "screen size" field. I ask them to type in my computer name but then it says something about "the remote desktop isn't accepting any connections blah blah blah. I placed tsweb as my default web page already.

Is there something else I need to do? I already put myself in the DMZ (I didn't know which ports to foward).

I did install VNC and the other person connecting said it was slow (I only have 12kb/s upstream), even runnning 1024x768. But it was easy, I had it up and running in less time it took for me to download it.

Well, I have a very similar setup to yours and have found the same thing if I type in my computer name. Therefore, I just leave that field blank and just click the connect button and it all works great.

Also, all you need is to forward port 80 on your router to your machine to get it to work as it is basically a web server.

Fivespeed, you may have to actually use your IP address in that field. From the outside, another computer won't know where your server is if you're just using the server name. If you have a dynamic IP address, check out dyndns.org. They have a free service that gives you a subdomain (username.dyndns.org), and if you install a little program on your PC, every time your IP changes, it will update their DNS so you can always find your server.
