Remote Desktop crashes, Win2k/XP

Running Remote Desktop host on an XPpro machine and client on Win2k -- both on modern hardware -- I can connect for a while but in about five minutes the client mstsc.exe will crash with an unknown error. The Dr. Watson log reports an Exception number: c0000005 (access violation), for mstsc.exe. Following this, if I restart remote desktop, it gets past the login screen, then immediately crashes with the same error. Background apps are shut down. Anyone encounter this problem or have any ideas?
