remote desktop away from home through router

I can do remote desktop within my home network no problem, but I've never figured out how to set up my router to let me do it from elsewhere. I was told I need to forward some port or something, but I wasn't able to understand instructions as they were just told to me without being able to see or apply them. Can anyone tell me how, or show me a guide? Someone using the same router would be superb, thanks!!

You need to forward Port 3389 to the IP of the computer you want to RD into. You can do this under Applications & Gaming, then Port Range Forward.

IMPORTANT: I just remembered that the correct port is in fact 3389, not 3889.

Thank you very much, I will set this in my router when I am home today, that sounds very much like what I have been told before.

Also, can you use other ports? People at my work do this and they say that there are only certain ports on our system that are open to use, therefore they do it on another port... would I need to change other settings within windows to make Remote Desktop work on another port?

Thanks guys!

Here is a link to changing the port that Remote Desktop listens to. You just have to remember that if you do this you will need to specify the port to connect to when initiating a connection. Like this; x.x.x.x:60001 instead of x.x.x.x.

Ok, I'm on that screen, but I don't understand what to fill in on all of the fields.

Here is a pic of exactly what is on the page if you don't have it in front of you.

What do I type in under application?

And then under start/end do I type for both the same IP (since for the IP range I want to forward is only that one port, aka 3389)?

And is protocol TCP or Both or?

Then the IP address would be the IP address of the computer I want to be able to remote desktop into, right? So I would need to statically set that in my network card so it will not change then? And what if I want to be able to remote desktop into either of my computers?

Thank you very much!! You have been extremely helpful!

PS: Sorry for all of the stupid questions, I wish I didn't need my hand held through the entire experience.

Not at all! 🙂

Application: A name to identify the ports being forwarded. This can be whatever you want.
Start/End Boxes: Since you are only forwarding 3389 you should have this number in both boxes.
Protocol: I don't know what protocol RDP uses so I would put both. 😱
IP Address: Don't need to explain anything more here...
Enable:...and the same here!

So you make sure it forwards to the right computer you might want to specify a Static DHCP IP Address in the Administration page.
