I know I've seen something like this before....... but I'm looking for something to remotely control my PC through infrared or something. I really only need the ability to control things like winamp and such.

Anyone know of anything like this?

-- i also posted this in "general hardware," but am gettin no love there

Yeah, I actually found that same one priced at $49 though.

You know where it's cheaper?

These things work ok? I'm actually getting it as a gift...

I think the one with a SB Audigy Platinum is all you need. You can program it to work with your programs, that is if you want the Audigy too.

That one seems pretty ghetto and a lot of setup and workarounds just to get the thing to work.

This is a gift for a computer illiterate.

$36.95 at buy.com
Shop around and look for the best price.
You can get the drivers for Me/2000 from Keyspan.com but I dunno if they support XP yet.

I've found mine works great. I use it for WinAMP and PowerDVD mostly. You basically configure it to emulate the keyboard shortcuts for what you want to control. It even has an alt-tab emulator so if something steals control you can get it back without getting up. The driver is also smart enough to know what prog is in the foreground and emulates the correct commands accordingly. It's pretty sweet.

I noticed the logitech one claims it can act as a mouse.

I don't know how useful that would be though...... more annoying than anythign else

Thanks for the buy.com link!

get the x10 mouseremote.
i have one and am very pleased with it. i can control anything on my computer (winamp, web, launch programs, anything) plus my tv, vcr, and all the lights in my house with one remote, and you dont have to point it at your PC, cause it RF. it was only $20 when i bought it, but i think they raised the price now.

if you do get it, dont install the software that comes with it. use Max10 instead. you can find it on winamp.com's general plugin list. it works much better.

Yeah, if your friend is computer illiterate, go with the Keyspan Digital Remote. The USB interface makes it real easy for setup. Also, if your friend has a game console, there are a lot of MP3 adds for the PlayStation, DreamCast, etc. And that's pretty idiot proof ;) The Packard Bell Remotes I sell require some technical skills so it is not a good gift for your "computer illiterate" friend.

that keyspan one looks VERY nice, if I didn't know that my roommate was getting an X-Box for xmas, I would get one to play DVD's on my laptop in the livingroom. :(
