remote assitance with a linksys firewall

Sully

Senior member
I have read all the posts on how to disable the firewall with a linksys router and I just can not get in using remote assistance in XP.
This is how I did the configuration:
1___ I have forwarded port 3389 on the firewall to 192.168.1.100 (my WinXP
PC on the "inside").

2___Set DMZ host to 192.168.1.100

And it will not work

What am I doing wrong?

Are you running any other firewall software? Like the XP firewall??
If so disable them.
Another thing, you dont need to forward ports if you are uding DMZ, you are outside the firewall and port forwarding does nothing for you...

Disable the port forwarding, it might be part of the prob, if you are using DMZ then you dont need the port forwarding.
I have done a remote XP support connection in ths manner and it worked fine for me, do you have the latest firmware?

Older versions of the firmware did not support IPSEC passthrough and thus VPN and Rmoete control XP would now work.

has nothing to do with IPSEC, VPN and so on.
It's not just one port.
I use it with IP forwarding, it's deeper TCP knowlege, Works perfectly!
otherwise put it on DMZ, and do not use any forwarders.

umm....in case you didnt know Remote Control in XP DOES use the IPSEC policy to make a secure connection between remote PC's.
As i told him before NOT to forward and do DMZ, its one or the other..not both.

now for the rest:

Previous versions of the LinkSys firmware for their routers did NOT support IPSEC, thus connections that required it (i.e VPN or RC in XP or other client connections requiring secure connect) would not work.
They subsequently fixed the issue with later firmware releases.

I am unsure as to what "deeperTCP/IP knowledge" is supposed to mean...but it isnt his issue.

It means that some other ports need to be open,
IPSEC passthrough set to enable, but looks optional. (check XP setting for IPSEC, So it's an issue, not to put lots of sht on a simple thing.
check what ports are open during the connection,
if machine is on DMZ it supposed to work immideately.
If i'll have time I will connect my old Linksys and copy port config for "forwarding variant".
:disgust:
