Remote assistant and Netmeeting

Does anybody ever use either one of these ? Remote assistant and Netmeeting.
Well, I've used both and sometimes I can connect and sometimes I can't.
Will any of these program work through router ?
I was trying to connect to my friend's PC in FL and I'm in Conn. He has DSL and I have cable.
Neither one of them worked. I know for sure he has wireless router on his end.

Does anybody know any if there's any good software out there similiar to these two.

Thanks

Either will work through a router if the ports required for those protocols are open. Most routers have some predefined port forwarding settings for common apps like netmeeting.

Netmeeting requires a couple of ports to be open in order to connect and is not secure where as RA only needs port 3389 open. Have your friend open up that port and forward it to his computer lan IP.

Next have him tell you what his wan IP is, I usually tell my friends to go to www.canyouseeme.org.
Next have him email you a RA request, once you get the request you will need to edit it and replace the IP that in the file with the one he gave you from canyouseeme.org.

Then connect.

If he doesn't need to see what you are doing and is running XP pro then I would just setup remote desktop, get his IP and then connect to it through XP's client, no having to mess with a request. It will use the same port as RA but he will have to make sure remote desktop is activated (pretty simple) and he will have to have a username and password for the account in order for you to login.
