Remote access without desktop sharing or control?

Someone wants to remote into a computer(s) over the internet in order to transfer files (to and from) but does NOT want to take over the desktop, take "control" of the computer, or otherwise interfere when someone is working at the computer. Basically, I guess a simple file view and navigator window from their side that allows them to browse the drives and directories, transfer files, but will not take control of the remote computer thus allowing someone else to continue using it.

Does TeamViewer or other app have the ability to configure this sort of "telnet" mode in advanced options? Any other options? I don't have access to the SonicWall firewall the computer sits behind, nobody knows the admin password. If it was all on a local network (intranet) that would be easy (simple file sharing) but it's not. TIA!!

So I'll just setup a separate computer/workstation for him to remote into from the internet and then enable file sharing on all the computers on the network. I'll have to loan them a computer because they don't have an extra one.

Teamviewer does have a file transfer mode. Though it is quite expensive.

Find a Windows 7 machine that has enough RAM and install a Virtual XP PC on it.

Install Teamviewer and share the folders on that XP machine.

Or install Virtulbox on a machine and create a VM and run Teamviewer on it and share the folder.

But I doubt anyone wants to share his own PC.

In other words: the outsiders cannot connect to anything in any way?

File access does not require active (desktop/telnet/shell) session. When you share files, your machine runs a file server service and the other machine runs a compatible client program in order to access the files.

Windows file sharing is only one such pair and protocol. There are also FTP, SCP, NFS, SSHFS, RSYNC, iRODS, etc.

However, whether Windows can run a server for any of those is moot in your case, if firewall prevents all remote connections.

I originally misunderstood their requirement or objective. I thought (mistakenly) it was just access to files but it has since been clarified they want to be able to run applications on the remote computer as well. So it's going to be remote desktop/control. This person wants a computer setup just for them to use not any other employees. It's all straight forward enough now.

Re: the Sonic Wall. Some company came in three or four years ago and reconfigured their network, added the Sonic Wall, also did some weird things which I don't understand why they have it setup that way. I wanted to get into the Sonic Wall to look at how it was configured but nobody knows the router/admin password and I don't want to reset it. The company is no longer in business. I guess it's not an issue since all the PCs have internet access, can see each other.

Thanks for trying to help or make sense of my inquiry!

Either sort out the firewall so you can configure it to allow windows remote desktop or try teamviewer first
