So my dad has some issues with his sound and the steps I'm giving him to resolve it either aren't working or its too complicated for him to grasp. What I need is recommendations on remote access software that would give me control of his computer. Preferably free. Thanks for your time.

Teamviewer = VNC without the setup hassles. Dad goes to the webppage, runs the program from there, and gives you the number on his screen.

if im at problematic computer and i know ill need vnc eventually, i install logmein on it and tie it to my account.

but in your situation, binky has it spot on. teamviewer can be done over the phone. love it!

Teamviewer is actually based on UltraVNC, an it is much better than LogMeIN.

On the Plus side.

No need to deal with opening ports at setup.

No need to set DNS service to maintain the external IP address.

On the Negative side.

Not as flexible as UltraVNC per-se.

Uses a 3rd party mitigating server instead of direct connection.

I switched from logmein to teamviewer for a few reasons:

- simpler for friends and family to start, no install necessary.
- file transfers available in the free version
- iPhone/iPad/android app is free
