Does anyone know of a software solution that will allow me to access a firewalled pc without opening ports on the firewall? I'm guessing something like GotoMyPC.com offers, but I'm too cheap and prefer either something free, or something I can pay for once and be done.

LOL, If you could do that, your firewall wouldn't be worth anything. The only thing I have seen that does somthing similar is Port Knocking and it is only for Linux. You will most likely end up opening one or more ports. What is the reason you need to access the PC ? (ie files, admin, ect)

Well, from what I'm guessing, GotoMyPC establishes a secure connection (https?) without requiring the opening of a port on the firewall, provided you install their software on the host pc. I guess it's working similiar to the way modern IM clients work w/o opening firewall ports. I'm just wondering if there's a cheaper way to accomplish this than the minimum 20 bucks a month.

The reason? Well like you said, admin, files, etc...

I bet they do this by establishing a connection from the client side and have a central server for everyone. Unless you have a server and software... . What I would do is install an FTP program and using VNC. You would still have to open ports, but you would save money.
I like these:
[*]VNC
[*]FTP

Both are pretty easy to use/setup.

Ports are closed. However when the computer/server request info from the out side the port get opened to accept an answer.

The Go to MyPC client probably transmits constant info to their server thus the local computer/server port is open and you go in.

If you contact your computer from a known location you probably can write script that will keep the server port open to your remote location. But if you are contacting your server from any where Nah!

You can use Server application that let choose an obscure port rather then 80 or 21. But I guess that here a lot of Bankers, Gold Traders, etc. that are scared of leaving few obscured Ports open. ;)
