remote access programs

What are some good remote access programs that are free? Im looking for ones that'll work with windows xp home edition. Im trying to remote access my sister laptop which has windows xp home edition sp2 from my brother desktop which has windows xp 64. I can remote access my brother computer just fine from my sister computer, becuase my xp professional has the remote desktop and remote assistance were as xp home has just the remote assistance.

I have found there are quite a few problems with the VNC free ones. Mostly with configuration and lag times. It is still a good application for it, especially to get your feet wet with firewall configuartions and port re-directing. Kinda sucks if you want to control more then 1 remote at a location, because you have to change the port setting for each one and make the corresponding rule on the firewall. But it does what is says and uses minimal resources for the hooks.

I have found logmein.com works well for what I want, which is just remote desktop... I also like it for my family since I can tell them to expect an email from me. In the Logmein account, I can send them a message that will install the client for them and hook them into my account for remote. They only have to think of what they want their machine to be called.
The biggest problem with them is it only works for windows machines, no mac or Linux... It also runs in Java, and Java can have problems of it's own unrelated to anything else. And you also have to trust they are not poking around and monitoring what you are doing too as well as their own security is not flawed.

yeah, i'd email my teacher yesterday, asking him which one we were using in class like 6 weeks ago. We used tightvnc, it looks kinda like ultravnc. But yeah tightvnc is the one our teacher had us use to remote access our lab partner computer.

All the vnc programs are relitively the same (free versions) tightvnc boasts being most lightweight, but who knows.

I use realvnc4 registered version to control my pc from work and have found that shutting off the background and lowering color depth greatly reduce lag times. and dont use scaling for the same reason.

On a side note (But on topic) I found a link to this while browsing files on palmgear the other day http://www.avvenu.com/

havent tested it out yet but seems promising, and free

I've been using VNC since the late 90's, so I'm more than familiar with it. I also have a Win2K server at home running the usual Terminal Services in Admin mode, and find VNC clunky and pathetically slow in comparison. XP Pro's RDP services are somewhere in between even though it's based on the same client as TS.

NetOP is one of the few remote access applications I've found that can compete with Terminal Services, but it's pricey.
