Remote access from internet to router-based lan client

Hey guys,

I'm trying to access my windows/linux system from the internet.

The setup is as follows:

me
|
| <-- interwebs
|
Router
|
|<-- wired lan
|
client to be accessed

My internet access to the router is DHCP, my router is a wtr54gl running DD-WRT v23 SP2 firmware, and I want to know how I would access my files from a remote PC from the internet.

So ideally what I would like to do is putty in (or some sort of window equivalent, doesn't really matter what that is) and look at my files. Eventually I would like to RDP to this computer. Any ideas dudes?

Thanks in advance

Is the remote PC Windows? Is the client you're trying to access Windows? Do you have the ability to install software on one or both?

Yes, yes, and somewhat. Both machines are XP

I'm trying to gain access from my work computer. I do have admin rights on my work computer, but I would rather not have to install anything. Something like UltraVNC would be just fine since you don't need to install VNC viewer.

I don't know about not installing anything. LogMeIn seem to get me past weird network configs. You can also set up Hamachi.

Talking out of my butt here as I do not know if its Linux supported.

What I want is to understand the mechanics (not a good word to use) behind how I would do this. I would rather not use Hamachi or LogMeIn. Any more ideas? Thanks so far.

So "me" = your work computer and "client to be accessed" = your home computer right?

Well, with proper port forwarding you should easily be able to tunnel in and/or RDP to your computer. Unless, of course, your work blocks the ports. here's a good tutorial.

FWIW though, I find logmein and hamachi to be stellar programs/services....especially since they're free.

Correct.

My work does not block RDP ports because it uses them frequently to connect to process workstations.

What I really want though is a way to ping my home computer from work. I just want to know how that would be possible. I understand about using logmein, etc. but I just want to touch my home files not necessarily get at the whole UI. Any other suggestions?
