It was considered pretty heavy AI back then. The game had some pretty cutting edge tech in there. If you could even really call it a game (it wasn't particularly fun).

You created a species and let it run around the planet. That's pretty much it.

I played it, but didn't have it. I did have Sim Isle, which sucked.
 
I remember copying my friends Sim City 2k install to a zip disk and running it from there on our old 386. I wanted to play it so bad, but the 386 only had a 60mb hard disk. Running SC2k on an IBM PS2 386 from a zip disk connected via paralell port = slow!
