Is this a good shotgun for a newbie?

I plan on deer hunting mostly, but like the option of having a bird barrel.

Should I get a 12 or 20 gage?
 
go 12. I have the same gun. Mine is a pump action, and i love it. I use mine mostly for turkey and game birds and its great.
