I am of the opinion that people who saw horrible death and destruction overseas are LESS likely to shoot in a tense situation.
I assume it differs with each person. Seeing war certainly impacts a person; some are more likely to shoot, some less. I suspect on average a person is more likely to, though others will certainly be so appalled with more death that they'll go above and beyond to avoid it.

I know some will call this guy a huge pussy but I think his behavior was resplendent and I think he always believed he was in control of the ability to shoot the guy if he truly, absolutely had to. Quite the contrast from that cop who shot the dude recently who was reaching for his registration in the gas station parking lot.

Good for him. The suspect was obviously sick and I think he recognized this.

Killing someone should always be the last resort after all options have been exhausted. I definitely think his military training had a lot to do with the outcome.

You know what sucks is the fact that he could have killed that guy and walked. That is the problem that needs fixed. Civilians lives and well being should come before LEO's.

few good apples indeed. Most cops were losers in the high school, and now want to stroke their ego on the taxpayers dollar.

While we're handing out advice... if aren't committing a crime you have MUCH less chance for police interaction and violence.

While I don't think criminals deserve some of what they get, if they weren't doing what they were doing the situation would be a lot different.

IF this officer shot the man in this situation Yes he would have walked and rightfully so.

He had a man charging him intent on getting killed. IF he had a weapon it could have been deadly for the officer.

saying a LEO should put his life at risk over a civilian is silly. NOBODY SHOULD HAVE TO. Though in the news their have been many stories where they seem to jump to using a gun first. that is a problem.

The irony there is that the guy wanted to be killed by the cop and then became totally passive and cooperative once he realized that the cop very likely would _not_ shoot him.

One in a thousand situation. There are tens of thousands of meatheads masquerading as cops in this country who would have emptied an entire magazine into that guy and then never lost a minute of sleep over having done so.

Isn't that their job? To protect and serve as civil servants? I'm not saying take unnecessary risks, I'm simply saying exhaust all options before you kill. They know the risks when they sign up. They are also given safety equipment, training and tools to handle different situations.

Plenty of jobs involve great risk to life and limb. It's a matter of finding the right person for the job. Police agencies need to do a better job of weeding out and getting rid of the bad apples. Training also needs to get better. And dare I say go for a non-lethal solution before you grab your gun.

Was hoping to get in and post that someone is going to mention the race of the suspect as the defining reason the office did not shoot but I was beaten to it.

I'm guessing the guy was white.

Edit: Indeed he was.
