I get the nostalgia of it all but I'm working on a PC for a friend right now and he has a 320gb WD HD and I'm installing Windows 7 on it (because who really want's Windows 10 after all?). And this thing is nice and noisy. I miss SSD's already!

How is it mounted to the case? Are the mounting points isolated with rubber from case-metal?

That makes a big, big difference . . . . just as it makes a big, big difference with cooling fans . . .

If it isn't isolated, there are probably some solutions you can buy, but you can jerry-rig something any number of ways. I'd even seen where someone used rubber surgical tubing to suspend HDDs in 5.25" bays.

Isolating hard disks from case metal is like taking the precision-made sounding board out of a grand piano. Bad for the piano, good for a quiet PC.

I love the sounds of old hardware. I have a 540mb Quantum drive and the sounds it makes are almost obnoxious. It's a toss up between it and the Lite On psu. haha But when it loads up Doom or Duke Nukem I'm in heaven. Besides it makes you appreciate just how far we have come when it comes to personal computers. Most people carry a PC around in their pocket these days.
