I remember him saying that he would eliminate the debt in 4-8 years, likely 8 years

Donald Trump: “We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt.”
Bob Woodward: “How long would that take?”
Trump: “I think I could do it fairly quickly, because of the fact the numbers…”
Woodward: “What’s fairly quickly?”
Trump: “Well, I would say over a period of eight years. And I’ll tell you why.”
Woodward: “Would you ever be open to tax increases as part of that, to solve the problem?”
Trump: “I don’t think I’ll need to. The power is trade. Our deals are so bad.”
Woodward: “That would be $2 trillion a year.”
Trump: “No, but I’m renegotiating all of our deals, Bob. The big trade deals that we’re doing so badly on. With China, $505 billion this year in trade. We’re losing with everybody.”

Two years in and here are the results:

The national debt has been rising at an accelerated rate in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, when Congress and the Obama administration approved stimulus funding in order to keep the economy afloat.
The debt began to level off at the beginning of Trump's term, but bounced up again last year as the tax cuts passed at the end of 2017 took effect and the dramatically lower corporate tax rate lowered Treasury revenues.

Admittedly it hasn’t been 4 years however I see no reason why it will plunge. Also I’m not a deficit hawk but I will say cutting taxes when the economy is growing sounds pretty dumb
The President missed the 2 trillion per year reduction AND added an additional 2 trillion to the debt.

The boob still conflates trade deficits or surpluses with revenue for the Treasury. Where does he get these ideas from. God what a moron we have in office.

But he keeps saying there is winning? I think there is winning. Because he says it.

Politicians lie. All the time. All of them tell you what they think you want to hear. Every single one.

But Both Sides!

This is about the President making a claim and doing nothing to bring that claim to fruition

Someone that lies and cons will say anything to make a sale or convince someone.
So one can list every single campaign promise Trump made and none of it matters.
He wasn't serious and he knew it when he said it.
What he did know was people are easily fooled. They can be ignorant. Conned. Blind sided.
Best example is whats happening right now. Trump knows his wall would be totally ineffective in stoping illegal immigration. The wall is just a stupid campaign promise to satisfy his base. Something he can later lie about on its effectiveness and boast about during his rallies.
We wouldn't know if the wall was effective because even if it wasn't, and it wouldn't be, Donald Trump would lie about it anyway.
I'm starting to believe something else is going on here.
That somehow someway some business associated to Donald Trump will be put in charge of building the wall. And Trump will funnel that taxpayer money to his benefit.
And if he ends up getting his wall the clue to watch out for is Trump asking for more and more and more money for his wall.
Trump will claim far more taxpayer money is needed to DO IT RIGHT.
And there we will know we are being played and conned by this con artist.

It's funny..no sad, really, that you somehow think that Trump is just the same old, same old.

Do you honestly believe that?

The DNC needs to put together a "Trump's greatest hits" package. Things that he promised, that he directly lied about and/or failed to act on. Make a list, organize it by potential use, and let the 2020 nominee have fun with it.

Also need to practice countering his most obvious response to being caught in lies. Let's say...
  • "You promised this..."
  • "But they won't let me!"
  • "So you're a liar or a bad leader"
  • "No, you!"
  • "Ladies and Gentlement, the Toddler of The United States"
  • "Whaaaa!!!!!!"

No, not always. And importantly, there's a big difference between promising something that merely faces tough odds (many US politicians are thwarted by a less-than-cooperative Congress or President, for example) and promising something because you genuinely don't understand how economics and government budgets work.

This is so unfair; Trump had to deal with a batshit crazy Congress for the past two years.

Nothing to see here, folks. Everything is perfectly normal, but only in a post-truth sort of way.

I can't even tell if he meant the trade deficit or the national debt...

He meant the national debt, he doesn’t start talking about trade until after he gives the 4-8 year time frame.

I anticipate any opponent in 2020 is going to make these sort of lies front and center. We’ve never had a president in history even remotely this dishonest.

Yes dumbass and we have a President who lies on a level that would make Pravda blush.

Do we have a "keep you health plan" Obama quote incoming to defend your simple minded statement?

Were you saying this when Trump made that promise?

He's obfuscating. Besides that, the Wall! will solve all our problems in ways that only our Supreme Leader can possibly understand.

It's gotten to the point where facts don't matter. Where reality isn't a valid concept. Where truth is a pinata to be pummeled until feathers fly everywhere. Where laughter > cognition. Where more beer > whatever. Honestly, keeping track of Trump's inconsistencies, his reversals, his inability/unwillingness to fulfill his promises is just a depressing endeavor. They say his base doesn't care about any of that. If he isn't defeated in 2020 I will just throw my hands up and say the USA is a lost cause.

I agree the President and Congress should put more effort into reducing the National Debt. A lot more.

They should also cut back on foreign aid which would be a good place to start. I wouldn't be opposed to a tax increase either. Our national debt is out of control and the politicians don't give a shit. None of them do.

And before someone brings up the wall request of 5 billion dollars. That is a drop in the bucket. Esp when we spend ~ 49 billion on foreign aid.
