remember when the Lotus Elise 'outran' the Apache on TopGear?

not an apache in the movie though, apache's have similar cannons mounted under the nose that shoot 600 rounds a minute i think. they also come with 8 hellfire missles, 32 rockets, stock, and some optional sidewinder missles on the wingtips. do a google image search for an ah-64 apache to see bad a$$.

There is no such thing as a "stock" loadout for any military unit. Weapons load depends on mission.

In addition to the gun (whose ammo may vary by mission), the Apache has 2 under-wing hardpoints and a wingtip hardpoint on each wing. Each underwing hardpoint can support a 19-rocket FFAR pod or a 4-rail Hellfire missile rack. While the wingtip hardpoints CAN support Sidewinder missiles (one each), it's more common for a double-rail of Stinger missiles to be mounted on each wingtip (airborne variants of the shoulder-mounted anti-aircraft missile used by US infantry). Although, it's MOST common for no air-to-air capability to be mounted at all. Helicopter gunships are anti-ground assets, not anti-air, and weight is always at a premium with any flying unit.

<-- breaks out his Ride the Lightning CD. 😀

BTW, what's the top speed on an Apache in mph ?

Armed to the teeth?

About 140 knots (~160mph)

"Empty" (just the gun), it's faster.

Repost.

Let's not forget that the rounds that you can actually see are tracer rounds, and are only one fifth of the rounds being shot. So for every one that you can see, there are four more.

That is NOT an Apache gattling gun. There's not even an Apache in the video.

Apaches do not have gattling guns (miniguns) on them. They have a single barrel 30mm cannon with a slow rate of fire.

The gun in that video is a 7.62mm minigun. Same caliber and round as the .30-06. It has a very fast rate of fire, around 4000-6000 rounds per minute.

Don't forget the point of TG was for it to achieve missile lock, not to destroy it.

It was a show made for entertainment, and it did a great job entertaining. But it wasn't real. The Apache would have no trouble getting missile lock in real life.

But that would be a pretty boring show if the helicopter got lock instantly.
