Remember when I said Abortion was little more than a wedge issue

Here's why. Northern Republicans are scared to death the President will actually DO something about abortion. As I have said before, the religious right can forget about seeing Roe v. Wade reversed because it would cause massive political losses in the North and West for Republicans and they'd lose control of the Senate first and the House second. The politician who pisses off all those women will be a marked man.

No way we will see Roe v. Wade reversed.

Spector is a smart guy...though I frequently disagree with him.

Yes, Spector is a moderate. He's got a brain and it's not data linked to the Old Testament.

Bush can't win again anyway, he has nothing to lose by getting Roe vs. Wade overturned.

Bush is a represntative figurehead of a much larger cultural movement. If you don't think he's led by the nose by the hive-mind of this movement I think you may mistaken. Though much WILL be accomplish (for lack of a better term) in this admin, some of the deepest and most contentious issues must still be avoided or dealt with very carefully due the fact that if the house and senate change majorities it will render the final two years of the Bush dynasty lame.

Well, plus the president can't exactly *overturn* it. His best bet is to assign Supreme Court Justices who are *likely* to overturn it if the case is ever brought up for re-hearing.

All in all, it actually *is* pretty unlikely that he could or will do anything about it.

I live in Philadelphia, where Spector is not all that popular. But people in the suburbs, especially Chester County, HATE his guts over the abortion issue. I really thought Pat Toomey would defeat him in the primaries, but the endorsements of President Bush and Sen. Santorum were enough to keep Spector just barely ahead.

I honestly thought a lot of folks would not vote for Spector and that Hoeffell would win. Many of the pro-life people I know in PA would shoot themselves rather than vote for Spector.

If Bush sends up another Scalia you can count on a filibuster. It might take Bush four years to get one Supreme Court nominee through if he doesn't handle it properly. And what about the rest of his agenda?

On the other hand, they have so many seats in the Senate now cloture would be much easier.

Anyway, if Roe v. Wade is overturned after the appointment of a SC judge by a Republican president, the Republicans can kiss about 10 Senate seats and about 50 house seats goodbye. Some Republicans might actually change parties.

I'm opposed to abortion, for the record, but no way I'm going down that path. Uh, uh, life's too short to tilt at the world's biggest windmill with a sparrow's feather.

More importantly, if Roe v. Wade is overturned, that only means that states will have the authority to outlaw it if they so choose via their legislature (as it should have been in the first place). The Supreme Court can't simply say "Abortion is illegal". They can only say the states may decide the issue amongst themselves.

That won't happen. No chance. Zero. Zilch. De natha. As in no way Hosea, Chapter 1, verse 3.

You right wingers have been fed a bundle of comfortable pap by the Republican Party without insisting that they tell you HOW they were going to outlaw abortion. You've been sucker punched by Karl Rove. He only cares about your vote and his man. You think he cares about abortion? Bwuahahahahahaha!

Family values, gay marriage, amendments to the constitution. All pap.

And these new statutes banning gay marriage will be put to the test when some state allows actual gay marriages and those folks move to Ohio, or wherever and seek recognition. You can't stop it with a statute, only by a Constitutional Amendment, and that ain't gonna' happen.

So, what did the right wing actually win? They "won" a President who will spend their tax money like a drunken sailor, kill their kids in Iraq, and lie to them about everything from social security reform to abortion.

Bush sold you a Mercedes and will deliver a Yugo. Who you gonna' call?

I agree. These fringe (so called) "issues" are a bunch of red herrings to distract from the real issues. It will be "interesting" to watch the Repugs have an atavistic orgasm ritually sacrifing large parts of US social programs on the altar of "necessity".
