Remember when having a fast pc caused Command and Conquer games to go 1000 mph?

I don't remember that. I do remember however that having two construction yards did make building ques faster though or having two war factories making units build quicker.

I remember before dual core processors really hit the mainstream, they would cause a lot of games to run a double speed. There was an AMD patch you had to install to stop it from happening.

I had a 286 with a "turbo" button on the front of the case, I want to say the stock speed was 10mhz and the button made it 12. I remember plenty of games that ran way too fast unless it was turned off, I don't think anyone from the modern PC gaming era could even understand this lol.

Fast CPUs actually caused issues playing Fallout (or maybe FO2?) because random encounters would fail to occur because you traveled so quickly from one city to the next. They made a patch for it...and this was back when folks were using single-core A64/AXP/P4 systems. I cannot imagine this with a 4.0ghz+ SB. :)

A lot of old games seem to do this. Try running a DOS emulator with the wrong settings applied.

I have to temper around in .INI files for the original Unreal Tournament for it to "throttle" at a regular pace with the CPU, or something along those lines, otherwise everything on-screen happens at light speed, even including the music. I also have the same problem with Beyond Good & Evil (GoG version).

There was actually software created to help out with this at the time, like Mo'Slo.

As for turbo buttons, those were fantastic. :p Oddly, when we picked up a P100 in around '96, it had a turbo light (which was always on) but no button.

Back then the turbo button would turn on/off the math co-processor. Now the FPU is an integral part both AMD and Intels processors and are always on.

My first computer was a 286 with a red turbo button:)

Only games I remember playing on it were Wolfenstein 3D, Original Red Baron and Dune.

Good times indeed.

It went the other way too, I had 33MHz PC at the time which was half as fast as it required so it ran at half speed, was really annoying so I just played WC2 instead most of the time.

I had a 386 with a turbo button to go from 33 Mhz to 66 Mhz. Made my tank game, think wolfenstien style graphics, go from normal movement to clear across the map movement when I hit the up arrow key.

I remember cleaning my mouse. Peeling the little black stuff off was fun and strangely soothing.
