Cliff's Notes:

Gateway Tech Support is now required to sell at least $90 worth of equipment to 1 out of every 6 calls. The pages titled The Tech Support Sales Initiative and Why We Should Be Concerned contain the gist of it, the first couple of pages give background.

Gateway support is still good - my parents use it all the time, either to just ask questions or to solve a problem. As long as they are happy, I have to believe that their tech support isn't as bad as everyone says it is :)

My phone company does this (Ameritech). Every call to tech support is followed by a sales pitch :|

For freaking real man. When I signed up, I told them I wanted the basic service. 2 weeks later, in comes my bill for $75!

They call all the time, since I did switch over to the most basic service. It took me about 45 minutes to have them stop trying to sell me anything more.

OMG, I called today to set up my telephone in my apartment next month and the guy started his shpill. I was like just give me the most basic, cheap program you have. He got all through and was like it will be $29.95 plus taxes., this comes to $40/month. I was like WTF, that's the cheapest you have. He then said no we have a basic package which doesn't have call waiting or caller ID. I was like that is what I just asked for, I don't have a lot of money. Then it came out to be $25.01 a month plus a $42 set up fee, which we can and are going to pay over 4 months.

Lol, no to be truthful I don't. Gateway, propritary PITA systems second only to Compaq desktops on the POS meter :)

compaq stopped that proprietary crap a long time ago. My current box is a Comcrap and it's anything BUT proprietary.

Actually, to be honest, I have a 3-1/2-year-old Gateway that has taken almost every upgrade I've chosen to do and never needed a single proprietary component. In fact, the entire time I worked there, I never saw a decent desktop system that had any proprietary parts. Some of the laptops and all-in-one pieces of crap though... <shudder>
