Remember the company that fired the smokers

Searched and didn't see any threads for it.

That same company that fired people for smoking is looking at the fatties now. I don't think they are firing people as apparently obesity is covered in the same way AIDS is according to the article.

This has been hashed out already in the other thread.

The simple fact is, employers have ALWAYS had the legal right to do things like this. Most choose not to, and have not done this because there is no profit in it.

This is not something new, just something stupid by one isolated employer.

But the company isn't planning to fire employees for unhealthy lifestyle choices, according to a Weyco news release.

"Anyone concerned about limiting employers' rights to specify terms of employment should know that federal law protects people with conditions like obesity, alcoholism and AIDS. But there's no right to indulge in tobacco," the news release said.

An official of the company -- which administers health benefits -- estimated that 18 to 20 of its 200 employees were smokers when the policy was first announced in 2003. As many as 14 of them quit smoking before the policy went into effect.

I realize it was all already hashed out. My point was that they were actually taking it to the next level with the fat thing. Although I like how they handled this better, with incentives rather that threats.

My company has a similar policy. It is called the Wellness Reimbursement Plan. They will pay half of all expenses related to gym memberships, health classes, weight loss programs, and costs related to quitting smoking.

There is no requirement to use the program and they will not fire you for being fat. It is just an added benefit because healthy workers are generally more productive.

Naw, what they'll do is keep the people who drink the recommended glass of wine a day or so, and fire anyone who drinks more or less.

They should probably go ahead and start requiring cholesterol tests for all employees as well, and fire anyone that doesn't submit, or has an unacceptable result. After all, you can be thin and still have high cholesterol.
