Nickname?

Like Cockroach from The Cosby Show. His real name in the show was Walter. He became Cole Brown on "Martin."

Ok ... then why would that be his nickname.

And how did they get away with it on a "family show"?

Because it was never used in the context of him having a boner, it was just his nickname.

Reminds me of 2 funny things from gradeschool. Every day the teacher wrote a word on the board. One day it was boner, and she asked us "if we had pulled any boners lately". At 10 years old, that's probably the funniest thing in your life.

The second funniest was when she wrote "Today is Wednesday - It's Hump Day!"

LOL - yes. Pulling a boner is "making a silly mistake". I think it was much more used in the 50's and 60's - until the current meaning of the word boner came around :D

Hump day is from Wednesday being the middle or "hump" of the week.

Public schools :D
