Remember Service Merchandise stores?

Anyone remember Service Merchandise stores? Big catalog store, you looked around and filled out this like little mini-golf looking score pad with a little pencil, handed it to someone, they keyed it in, then you waited for your stuff to come down a conveyer. I remember thinking that sounded so old and archaic back when my parents used to take me there in the 80's. Then it sounded even more old and archaic when I used to go in the 90's. I haven't seen a store in a long time, I think they went bankrupt a few years back?

They closed up a few years back. My Grandma used to go there for gifts and other stuff.

LOL, I bet like 90% of their business was the 70 and over club.

You means like Consumers?? I used to get all my He-Man and Centurions action figures from there.. they were pretty cheap when compared to places like K-Mart or Towers..

Oh teh noess! You've brought back memories of my grandmother dragging me in there as a kid.

😕🙁

Used to be a couple in Pittsburgh. Their prices weren't bad. I agree with daveshel, the catalog showroom store concept is dead. I don't think you can compare them to CC, BB or CUSA because Service Merchandise carried a much wider range of stuff.

god same here!!

im going to go crawl up in a little ball in the corner of the room now.

I met my wife at a Service Merchandise here in Houston. She was a department Manager and I was working part-time since I had a lot of free time on my hands. Worked there about 4 months, hated it. My wife worked there about a year, until I made her quit. Worse company she's ever worked for.

That's Ikea man, just no conveyer.

I used to love going the that store when I was a kid. One of the few places you could get games for the Odyssey game system.

I kind of liked that store- lots of unusual items (My favorite was the fish aquarium grandfather clock). Went there when I needed a gift since they had stuff nobody else carried.
