The sad thing over this whole controversy was that Thacker was someone who potentially could have been a very effective proponent for the prevention/treatment of AIDS.

Things that were not pointed out in most news reports:

1) Thacker, his wife and his daighter have AIDS from a bad blood transfusion.
2) The term "gay plague" was located on his website in his biography. (which was changed shortly after the incident)

Quote:
He had a beautiful family, a good church and a rewarding ministry. He knew vaguely about the 'gay plague' known as AIDS, but it seemed a distant threat. AIDS was something that bad people had to worry about. Not Christians. Not the church. But one Saturday morning in 1986, AIDS came home to the Thackers

During the 80's the term "gay plague" had been used by the medical community and other groups INCLUDING the gay community. Originally AIDS had been called GRID for "Gay Related Immune Deficiency." The reference in Thacker's biography was obviously historical.

This was a man who was NOT anti-homosexual, but anti-AIDS. In an interview, Thacker remarks on his experiences when talking about AIDS and answers if he had had any antigay allegations early in his career

"I've had nothing but good experiences, really. Even at that same rally, I had two leaders within Greenville gay circles compliment me on presenting a balanced presentation of correct information. So I really can't say that I've had that many challenges or problems."

This is someone who had a very personal investment in the battle against AIDS Someone who was targeted because of politics.
