Just a reminder to those who have older hardware around. If it begins to get a little flacky, strange booting issue, and freeze ups... it could be the CMOS battery..
My smoothwall firewall was acting up after update4-386 was applied a few days ago. The system would just stop responding after some period of time. Couldnt figure it out for the life of me. Thought the update had broked it, but there we no similar post about the issue on their forums.
Well bios data must have been in a corrupt/failed state. It wasn't until i slapped a head(monitor) on it that i saw the CMOS checksum error. $6.99 for 2 from the local pharmacy has solved my issues.
The kids computer was also acting up in this stange manner, i just had't gotten around to troubehooting it, but that cr2032 appears to also be dead. Its battery gave a checksum error when i tried it in the smoothwall box after tyring to save settings as well. Off to replace that one too. Might just be a Christmas present for daddy.
instead of ~$250(790gx, ram, cpu) on a new substem for the kids, i just might end up with upgrade money for daddy..
$6.99 vs ~$250
Ho Ho Ho...
