Remember how i said SETI had my computer whipped?

True as it is, i was wondering if anyone had any tips for me, for those that didnt' read the original post, basicly SETI ownz my computer....basicly i can't shut down SETI or my computer will lock up. The only exception is when i'm doing something CPU intensive such as a game or making a divx....once that task completes, my system locks up, unless i have SETI open before it's done...

Win98se
Soyo k7-vta-b
Duron 800@850
256mb Generic ram
ATi Rage Fury Pro
SOHOWare 10/100 nic
SETI CLI w/ Seti Driver

Help?

[dont take offense to this SETI people]

In my own expirience, I have found seti to be the must resource hogging program alive. Even tho i had it at the lowest priority and all, it still clogged up my memory and PCI bus and made my comp feel like molasis. And that is not even counting all the trouble it is to download 1MB+ WUs every few hours(I have a 1600+). I dont know what you could do either. Maybe boot up in safemode and uninstall it, then try a newer version. Maybe another thing you run is having trouble?

Who knows, good luck!

No it's not that it slows my computer down any that i notice during normal operation, i feel it a bit when playing games though. The problem is whenever i try and turn it off my system locks up....

Odd problem. Also made me wonder why you were trying to shut down Seti, but I suppose as the owner of the PC you at least ought to have the ability to shutdown Seti, but I really think someone is trying to tell you something.....

None of the following suggestions may help, but they won't hurt. Seti sometimes has a problem shutting down when you try to shut down Win98 )hasn't been a problem for me on W2K or XP). Going into the windows/system file, and unchecking the "warn if still active" box in conagent.exe fixes the shutdown problem. I'm assuming the Prioirty is set to Low? Last thing I'd try is a reinstall of Seti Driver/CLI, perhaps one of the files in the CLI or Seti Driver got fubar'ed somehow.

Edit: <<And that is not even counting all the trouble it is to download 1MB+ WUs every few hours(I have a 1600+).>>

Got a fix for ya', run SetiQ, set it to connect at 3:00 AM, you'll never even know it happened. 😀

I did that "warn if still active thing" When i first installed the drivers.......yeah, i don't know why i want to shut down SETI no need, but as the ruler of my kingdom(my desk) i think i should have full control over what goes on, and i think the fact that i'm not in control here is annoying me heh.....oh well, i geuss i'll just leave it running....i'll reinstall as soon as the race is over so in case i screw something up i won't loose time

If you have SETI running at low priority it shouldn't clog up anything. And WUs are 350 KB. 🙂

No offense taken🙂 ,but there are a few points that need answering

I've run the current versions of SETI on PC's right down to a Pentium 90 ,even though the WU took 79hrs when using the PC it did not have any impact on the systems performance ,my current slowest ship is a Pentium 233MMX @ 266 MHz ,again on this machine I wouldn't know that SETI was running without the DOS box showing ,though it does affect games. My point is that I think there must be something wrong somewhere with your setup to notice slow downs when running SETI.Maybe SETIDriver hasn't set lowest priority despite what it says in the window?.

I think you've got your maths wrong there my friend😉 ,WU's are about 350k ,& at the fastest an average WU on your rig would take about 3.5hrs ,so that would work out to about 1Mb every 10hrs or so.Anyway the answer there is to increase your cache to about 5 days worth & dump as & when you feel like it🙂 (within the 5 days).
Btw my AthXP 1500 @ 1530MHz with DDR does most WU's between 3-3.5 hrs ,with SETIQ I keep a 5 day store & usually flush every 1-2 days

That's 1 weird problem you have!😕 ,you don't have a CPU software cooler running do you?

Erm, how can I put this other than, NO.

Definite loss of performance in games, mainly when SETI decides its time to access something like RAM or hard-drive.

The only thing that was worse than SETI was GammaFlux (and look what happened to that).

Games is 1 of the few exceptions where SETI can hurt performance ,in this case just turn SETI off whilst playing games🙂.
btw I've also found playing videos (AVI,VCD etc) can stutter occasionally with SETI running(when it accesses the HDD) ,other than those 2 examples I've had no probs 🙂

I'd turn it off, but i'm afraid it'll lock up on me.....i notice differences when decoding audio and such, if i change priority to low, from normal, i get about 10 min taken off total time projected........i'm sure it'd have an impact if i were able to turn it off......but i geuss i'll just have to live in shame with my head held low, tail tucked between my legs....and know that i got my @$$ beat by SETI 😉😛

I put seti on my main machine right after i reformatted, it clogged up, so i put ECCp(my normal project) on again. I also tried it on my LAN box, and it was fubared too.

The rigs are in my sig, and all have had a new format and winXP put on in the last couple months.

Again, I am not attacking SETI, just sharing my own expirience.

I guess I was wrong about the WU thing, whatever

🙂

Maybe that's why NFS5 stutters every once and a while...heh, I'll have to try playing it without SETI running sometime and see if it still happens. 😱

SETI definitely screws around with gaming. My wife plays The Sims. With SETI running, shortly after launching the game, the sound cuts off. It does not do this with SETI closed, only with SETI running. It causes performance hits in other games too. UT, SOF, RTCW.......actually, just about any FPS.

I'm coming in a little late to this thread but there is one thing you might try, Lithium381:

After turning off SetiDriver by clicking on the EXIT BUTTON, do a CTRL ALT DELETE and look in your Close Program Window to see if the CLI Client is still running. If it is, then highlight it and click END PROGRAM (or whatever it says in Win98...I can't remember).

Do this when you want to play GAMES and let's see if the situation improves. 🙂
