my first large set was a 50inch sony, projection, it had a motorized mirror it front with the 3 stop lite bulbs , at the time i was the envy of the neighborhood. and at the time it did have a good pic, but now i have a vizio m65 3d, what a tv this is. specially in 3d. steve
 
There is obviously a lot of DLP experience in the thread, so this is call for HELP! I love my LED backlit (no bulb) Samsung, but it has developed an odd problem: Losing all video and screen light shortly (20 seconds to 3 minutes) after a startup that briefly shows great images; audio and blue light remain; takes a long 15-40 seconds to respond to a simple ‘off’ remote signal. Happens every 8th, 10th startup, most noticeable in morning after long off period with only Dish receiver screensaver on one HDMI input.Remote LEDS shows signal received but slow response to source changes as well; no video on any source input.Power off with remotedoes not fix; remove/restore power (rebooting) no help until the off period is about 15 minutes. When it runs or after I unplug for 20 minutes and retry, it runs many hours without a problem.Seems a heat related issue perhaps in a section of the power supply that does not turn off with Remote off. Perhaps a low digital voltage that makes the processor see low or noisy power as input changes and the processor goes off into lala land (delaying priority interrupt that a Remote Off should generate).Any ideas/guesses?What section of the TV: power supply, LED backlight driver(s) or logic?I changed the TI ‘white dot’ chip long ago; picture still the best of any LED/LCD/Plasma when it is running, so I’m hoping you can say open it up, change out board XXX or Part YYYY and I can go back to enjoying the video. Thx in advance.

DLP was killed by the flatscreen, no doubt. They also were made up of parts that died in 2-3 years. Replace them once under warranty and then you waited for the set to die ~ year five. Bulbs were expensive and hard to find. It was maddening to have them keep burning out. That savings you got by buying DLP over plasma/LCD was soon shot by those replacement bulbs. Black levels? That's why I got me a plasma. My VT50 is only three years old and will last me until the cost of 4K OLED comes down to reasonable.
 
Since posting this thread, I picked up a cheap HD65 for $200.

It's great. 720p, but whatever. Watched a that Tom Cruise movie where aliens invade Earth and it was fine. I don't even notice 720p vs 1080p.

On ebay there is a good BenQ projector you can find 1080p refurbished for around $600.

Oh, and I was afraid that I would have a rainbow problem with the 4x colorwheel. Nope. Not a problem.
 
Gotta say, I still love my Mitsubishi 60" 2009 DLP RPTV! The light bulb hours are over 3k now, so may have to replace it soon but it still looks bright and amazing!
TBH, nothing beats the organic "movie screen" feeling of this TV .. I love it. Black levels are ok.. better than an LCD at least =)
I have to move soon and Im really hoping the TV wont get damaged in moving =./ , I know these are quite fragile.

I miss good quality Plasma screens too, they had far better black levels then LCD's today ... it really sucks that the higher quality picture tech has gone straight out the window.
Everyone is obsessed w/ extremely bright, crappy black level LCD's ... its sad =( Not to mention just bigger numbers - resolution, bigger screen, bla bla bla ... which in the end dont speak much about picture quality.

pretty sure if you put a new bulb in, you will immediately notice how much brightness that old bulb has lost....your eyes just get used to the brightness and don't notice that it isn't as bright as before.
 
finally got rid of my 2004 samsung DLP lol. it's been sitting in a room for the past 4 years. my brother in law picked it up last friday and i couldn't have been happier!
 
I didn't know that DLP used up so much power. Like, it is over 200 watts.

Which kinda makes it not so great for summer. Winter, it'll double as a space heater.

I have a 60" Mitsubishi WD-60C10 that I bought back in 2011, it is absolutely fabulous. Mine was getting dim as well; I was planning on replacing it with a 4K set up until recently, when I bought a replacement bulb for $50 & it brought it back to life!

The only two modern televisions I've seen that are worthy to replace it are the LG OLED line & the amazing 75" Sony X940D HDR set I saw recently. The problem is I don't like spending ridiculous sums of money on fast-change television tech that always ends up with huge price-drops. I got the DLP for $730 shipped from Dell; there's no way I'm going to spend $6,000 on a 75" 4K HDR set when next year it will be half-price & my current set is working awesome with a replacement bulb 😛
 
I had to replace the light engine in my Mitsu last year after it started developing white dots. IIRC we paid around $2k for a 65" set in 2010 but it was the 8-series...no poverty spec for us 😛
