I've said this before many times: I don't think the Republicans are representative of true conservatism any more than Democrats are of true liberalism. They made a strategically retarded mistake to pander to the religious right, one that if not corrected ASAP will only serve to further marginalize the party, and alienate all but the neo-cons and religious right.
So in short, your usage of the terms Republicans and conservatives interchangeably does not compute IMO. Sure, their are conservatives in the Republican camp, like their are liberals in the Democrat camp. But they exist by default, rather than by true representation.
Let me ask you this, do you find liberals to be a monolithic group, like you do conservatives?
