Remeber trash compactors?

It seemed that half the kitchens in the country had trash compactors in the 80s.... I haven't seen one in years, though.

Were these popular everywhere, or just around where I lived? Are they still popular somewhere?

i remember they used to give them away on the price is right all the time

haven't seen one in real life and i agree they seem to have lost popularity, not sure why

I've been seriously thinking about getting one for about a year. My problem is that everyone I have found is about 2 inches taller than I need it to be to fit under my countertop.

I had one back in my old house.. kinda sucked, it either tore the bags every time you ran it, or made them too heavy to lift out of the compactor.

Seems like they'd be a handy appliance to have.

Think about how heavy that bag would be...

They might be worth it if they enable you to get a lower price on your garbage collection, but my garbage company lets me put as much trash out as I want and they come twice a week.

Not as many as you'd think, especially kids. Not much room for further compression.

Pets are easy, ever seen a shaved cat? Nothing to them under all that fur.

I've only seen one house ever have one (my in-laws). The thing is a piece of junk. Very loud, very hard to load/unload, useless for kitchen trash (where most are located), etc. For example: put one piece of food trash in there and within a few days you have a horribly smelly house. Regular trash bags fill up too fast to smell in the typical kitchen.

Plus in many areas there is no reason to use them. Like said above, my trash takes anything and everything for one low price. Why make it hard on myself and why spend money on it?

I have one and it fits 10 gallon trash bags perfectly. More of a trash drawer for me; the compactor function broke many years ago.

I've known people to use those for cans. That way when you take them in for recycling, it's a small bag and you get the crushed can bonus (usually about $0.02/lb)
